Functional Behavior Assessment

A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) focuses on severe challenging behaviors. The assessment is designed to identify the function (purpose) of the behavior as well as the predictors and reinforcers of the challenging behavior. Recommendations are then made for modifications in the environment to prevent the behavior, replacement behaviors, and reactive strategies should the behavior of concern resurface.

An FBA includes:

  • Parent and teacher input
  • Observation in multiple settings
  • Identification of environmental factors that currently support the behavior
  • Identification of the function of the behavior
  • Recommendation of environmental modifications/supports to minimize challenging behavior, replacement behavior for more adaptive functioning, and strategies to manage any reocurrences of the challenging behavior
  • Debriefing meeting with parents to discuss results and recommendations (optional: include school administrator/teachers in meeting)
  •  Written report
